The Challenge

Ditto software allows users to share their screens and display digital signage on any connected monitor. Ditto's signage feature was a major value-add for business and education customers, but we knew the ability to display signage wasn’t enough. Customers were leaving the platform to create content. In order to stay competitive and reduce attrition, we were challenged to build a content creation tool inside our existing platform.

Project Goals:

  1. Create an MVP experience that keeps users in the product longer, while still prioritizing usability and problem-solving

  2. Enable users to create and publish signage content directly in Ditto, no third-party design software required

  3. Increase digital signage usage and feature adoption among newly onboarded customers

Key user questions we set out to solve:

  • How do I create signage if I’m not a designer?

  • What kind of content should I display on screens?

Research & Insights

User research confirmed a need for in-app content creation.

What We Conducted:

  • Competitive analysis of other signage platforms

  • Behavioral data and product analytics

  • Audited our signage workflow and identified friction points

  • Sales & customer support team interviews

  • Surveys

What We Learned:

  • Users needed templates, not just blank canvases

  • Most wanted to add quick content: announcements, schedules, promotions

  • Complex editing tools created friction — users preferred simple presets and WYSIWYG tools

Design Process

We designed an intuitive signage editor MVP that helped users go from a blank screen to engaging content in a few minutes. I iterated on several requirements and decomposition notes from the engineering team — for MVP we wouldn’t have drag-and-drop functionality or complex styling options, but we could create something simple, appealing, and easy to use. While other teammates handled navigation and content creation tooling, I designed a basic layout for editing templates.

Design Iteration:

  • Text styling and customization

  • Template format, themes, categorization

  • In-product marketing content

  • Media storage functionality

What I Did:

  • Collaborated with developers to scope an MVP that prioritized core user needs

  • Worked with designers to translate template graphics into UI components

  • Designed template editor page

  • Wrote all UX copy: tooltips, badges, menus, labels, etc.

  • Tested templates with stakeholders for clarity and usability

  • Custom iconography design

  • Designed upsell pages and in-product marketing content

My Work:

  • Helped launch an MVP

  • Delivered a complete signage editor experience that required no design experience

  • Empowered users to create content and experience added value with Ditto

  • Strengthened Ditto’s position as an all-in-one screen management and signage platform

By meeting users where they were — time-strapped, non-technical, and unsure what to display — we gave them the tools to get content on screens, fast. This project helped position Ditto not just as screen mirroring software, but as a powerful, flexible display solution.
